PERSONAL STORIES
If you are still unsure about what home safety solutions would be best for you or your family during this stage of life, you can read about what’s worked for other people:
DeAngelo, age 81, knew that he had to make some changes at home after his daughter told him he kept forgetting to turn off common appliances throughout the day. One day she came home and found the oven had been left on for most of the day, almost starting a fire in the home. Working with her, they made some plans for the future and installed some devices around the house to make sure everything is safe for the both of them at home.
Carmen, age 66, was worried about her older brother, Gabriel. After moving him into her home, she noticed that he was having more and more troubles moving around the house and was worried about his safety. She found it easier to move Gabriel down onto the first floor of her home where he wouldn’t have to climb up and down stairs to do his daily activities. Hand rails and others guards ensure that he doesn’t trip and fall moving around the home, making both Carmen and Gabriel feel much better today.
Michael, age 54, moved in with his father when he started to show more advanced symptoms of dementia. After taking many steps to improve the safety of their apartment, Michael started to realize that he couldn't do everything on his own. It was a hard decision but he knew that keeping his father safe was what mattered most - he made the decision to start moving his father into an assisted living center where he knew he'd be taken care of and kept safe.
